ARTEFFECT 2026 Summer Art Competition— INNOVATION GENERATION

International Visual Arts Competition for High School Students

ARTEFFECT 2026 Summer Art Competition is an international visual arts competition for students in grades 9–12. The 2026 summer competition is centered on the theme “Innovation Generation” and invites young artists to explore the stories of Unsung Heroes whose innovations, inventions, and research made positive, profound, and lasting contributions to the lives of others.

There is no entry fee. The competition is open to students worldwide.


THE 2026 THEME: INNOVATION GENERATION

For this special summer competition, students are asked to create an original artwork inspired by an approved Unsung Hero Innovator.

ARTEFFECT describes Unsung Heroes as role models who are largely unrecognized by society but demonstrated extraordinary qualities and took actions that made a positive and profound impact on history and the lives of others.

For Innovation Generation, the focus is specifically on people whose:

  • innovations,
  • inventions, and
  • research

created meaningful and lasting contributions to others.

Students must select their subject from the official Innovation Generation – Unsung Heroes Directory.


WHO CAN ENTER?

The 2026 Summer Art Competition is open to:

  • Students in grades 9–12
  • Students around the world
  • Students entering 9th grade in Fall 2026
  • Students who graduated from high school in 2026

Students may develop their projects with a classroom teacher or work independently with confirmation from an instructor, parent, or legal guardian.

Group projects are not eligible.

Each submission must be the work of an individual student.

There is no submission fee for the 2026 ARTEFFECT Summer Art Competition.


WHAT KIND OF ARTWORK CAN BE SUBMITTED?

ARTEFFECT accepts a wide range of visual art approaches and media.

Eligible forms include:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Collage
  • Mixed media
  • Digital art
  • Installation
  • Textiles
  • Assemblage

Students may approach their chosen Unsung Hero through:

  • Abstraction
  • Landscape
  • Portraiture
  • Narrative art
  • Conceptual or other visual approaches

There is no size limit.

The artwork’s medium and dimensions must be provided on the submission form.


ACCEPTED MEDIA

The official rules specifically identify several media categories.

2D Dry Media

Examples include:

  • Graphite
  • Charcoal
  • Colored pencils
  • Pastels

2D Wet Media

Examples include:

  • Acrylic
  • Oil
  • Watercolor
  • Gouache
  • Ink wash
  • Printmaking

2D Digital Media

Digital artwork is eligible and digital files must be at least 300 dpi.

Multimedia films and photography are not eligible.

Mixed Media

Mixed-media projects may incorporate materials such as:

  • Photography
  • Digital art
  • Textiles
  • Collage
  • Paper
  • Other materials

3D Media

Examples include:

  • Ceramic
  • Pottery
  • Porcelain
  • Fibers
  • Metal
  • Wood
  • Glass

and other three-dimensional media.

IN-PROCESS PHOTOS ARE REQUIRED

Students must document their creative process.

At least three photographs showing concept sketches, drafts, and the development of the artwork must be uploaded with the submission.

This is an important requirement and should not be overlooked when preparing the entry.


IMPACT STATEMENT

The artwork must be accompanied by a reflective:

500–1,000 word Impact Statement

The statement must address the required prompts and explain the student’s connection to the chosen Unsung Hero and the creative process behind the artwork.

The student must address the following areas:

1. Introduce the Unsung Hero

Explain:

  • Who the person is
  • Why the student selected this individual
  • What qualities are inspirational
  • What the student admires about the person as a role model

2. Discuss the Unsung Hero’s Impact

Explain:

  • The person’s story
  • Their contribution
  • How they created positive change
  • Their impact on history or the lives of others

3. Describe the Artistic Vision and Process

The student should explain:

  • The concept behind the artwork
  • How the artwork represents the Unsung Hero
  • Artistic and technical choices
  • Materials and techniques
  • Research used during development

4. Explain the Impact of the Artwork

The student should discuss:

  • How the Unsung Hero’s story influences their own outlook or actions
  • How they plan to share the artwork
  • Any plans for extending the project’s impact into their community

The official rules require the Impact Statement to be submitted in English.


🚫 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS NOT ALLOWED

This is one of the most important rules of the competition.

The submitted project must be entirely student-produced.

Students may not use AI tools at any stage of the creative process for either the artwork or the Impact Statement.

The prohibition includes:

  • Brainstorming
  • Idea development
  • Drafting
  • Editing
  • Final production

Students must certify that AI tools were not used in any way.

Submitted projects may also be screened for potential AI-generated content.


JUDGING

ARTEFFECT is a juried competition.

The judging panel includes experts and practitioners from fields including:

  • Art education
  • Art history
  • Design
  • Fine arts
  • Museums

The judges place particular emphasis on artwork that presents the Unsung Hero’s story through a high-quality, well-crafted, visually compelling, and original artwork.

Judging Criteria

Creative Interpretation of the Unsung Hero’s Story — 40%

The artwork should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Unsung Hero’s story and present an innovative, thoughtful, complex, and compelling interpretation.

Aesthetic Value — 40%

Judges consider:

  • Technical skill
  • Craftsmanship
  • Execution of the chosen medium
  • Composition
  • Artistic voice
  • Overall aesthetic quality

Impact Statement — 20%

The written statement is evaluated for its ability to clearly and effectively address all four required prompts, including the student’s interpretation, creative process, personal reflection, and plans for sharing the work.


REQUIRED SUBMISSION MATERIALS

Students will need:

  • Information about the artwork
  • High-resolution artwork images
  • Impact Statement
  • Student and school contact information
  • Parent/legal guardian consent
  • Required submission information

Artwork image requirements

For 2D artwork, at least one image is required.

For 3D artwork, four images are required.

Images must be submitted as:

  • .jpg
  • .png

with a 5 MB limit.

Students are also required to submit the previously mentioned in-process photographs documenting the development of the work.

This category encourages students to explore distinctive stylistic approaches in visual storytelling.

Spotlight Prize – Media

This category focuses on selected artistic media and formats.

The 2026 Summer Competition includes:

Data Visualization

Artwork incorporating elements such as:

  • Charts
  • Graphs
  • Maps
  • Formulas
  • Schematics
  • Other forms of data visualization

Students may use data relating to their chosen Unsung Hero’s research, discoveries, inventions, or impact.

Polyptych

Artwork spanning multiple panels—such as two or more panels—that form a cohesive narrative.

The panels may be hinged or unhinged and may create a chronological, thematic, or other connected presentation.


CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE

The judges may award:

$750 Certificates of Excellence

Additional prizes may also be awarded at the judges’ discretion, and there may be multiple recipients.


INTERNATIONAL REACH

ARTEFFECT is an international student art competition.

The 2026 finalists include students from 32 U.S. states and 15 other countries, demonstrating the international reach of the program.


EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLICATION

All finalists and winners will be featured on the ARTEFFECT website.

Selected award-winning projects may also be presented in ARTEFFECT exhibitions and publications, including exhibitions at:

ARTEFFECT Gallery at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream — Washington, D.C.

and

Lowell Milken Center Hall of Unsung Heroes — Fort Scott, Kansas.


HOW TO ENTER

Entries are submitted online through Submittable.

Students should:

  1. Review the official rules.
  2. Select an approved Unsung Hero from the Innovation Generation – Unsung Heroes Directory.
  3. Create an original artwork.
  4. Document the creative process with at least three in-process photographs.
  5. Write the required 500–1,000 word Impact Statement in English.
  6. Prepare the required artwork images and information.
  7. Obtain the required parent/legal guardian consent.
  8. Create a free Submittable account.
  9. Upload and review the complete submission.
  10. Submit the project before September 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT.

Educators may submit multiple student projects using one validated email address.
